Sweet Basil

Aromatic annual herb growing to 50cm. Large medium-green shiny leaves that are sweeter and milder in flavour than other common varieties. Slow bolting. Can be grown hydroponically or in containers. Can be used fresh or dried.

Sowing Depth  : 2mm

Germination     : 5-10 days @ 18 - 35°C

Plant Height     : 50cm

How to Sow & Grow Basil Seeds

Basil is a warm season crop however it can be grown indoors all year round in a Garden Gizmo.

Basil seeds do not require any treatment (eg soaking, stratification) before sowing.

Basil seeds can be sown directly into the Garden Gizmo.

To give plants room to grow, thin seedlings when they are large enough to handle. Pull out any weak or small seedlings.

Harvest leaves by pinching off the outer leaves, leaving some on the plant for future growth. Store leaves short term in a perforated plastic bag in the fridge. For longer term storage, leaves can be frozen whole or chopped and frozen in ice cubes.

Chives

Allium schoenoprasum, 115 seeds 

Perennial growing to 25cm. Grows in slowly spreading clumps. Plant has green, hollow, tubular leaves that have a mild onion flavour; used as a garnish, in sauces, dips, stews, casseroles, salads and soups. Can be grown hydroponically or in containers.

Sowing Depth  : 5mm

Germination     : 7-14 days @ 18 - 21°C

Plant Height     : 25cm

Plant Spacing   : 15cm

 

How to Sow & Grow Chive Seeds

Avoid planting in extremely hot or cold weather which can affect germination and growth.

Chive seeds do not require any treatment (eg soaking, stratification) before sowing.

Tip: Chive seeds are quite small. Handle them carefully to avoid them blowing away or being washed away. Use tweezers to help space them evenly. Press lightly into the surface after sowing so that the seeds make good contact with the soil. Take extra care to make sure seeds and seedlings don’t dry out.

To give plants room to grow, thin seedlings when they are large enough to handle. Pull out any weak or small seedlings

Tip: To prolong the life of the plant, remove flower stalks as soon as they appear.

Harvest leaves by cutting off the outer ones at the base, leaving some on the plant for future growth. For short term storage, chives can be wrapped in a damp paper towel and placed in a perforated plastic bag in the fridge.

How to Sow & Grow Parsley Seeds

Parsley seeds do not require any treatment (eg soaking, stratification) before sowing.

Parsley seeds can be planted directly into your Garden Gizmo.

To give plants room to grow, thin seedlings when they are large enough to handle. Pull out any weak or small seedlings so plants. You will want 1 mature lettuce plant per grow pod.

Harvest leaves by pinching off the outer leaves, leaving some on the plant for future growth. Eat leaves as soon as possible after harvesting. Store leaves short term in a perforated plastic bag in the fridge.

Silverbeet - Rainbow Chard

Biennial normally grown as an annual, growing to 60cm. Stems in a mix of colours including golden yellow, light pink, white and crimson red. Very attractive. Silver beet is also known as "Swiss Chard" and is often confused with "Spinach". Use the young baby leaves and stalks raw in salads or gently cook larger leaves. Highly nutritious.

How to Sow & Grow Silverbeet Seeds

Parsley seeds can be planted directly into your Garden Gizmo.

Optional: SIlverbeet seeds do not require any treatment before sowing, but soaking seeds overnight in room temperature water prior to sowing may result in improved or more uniform germination.

Harvest leaves by cutting off the outer ones at the base, leaving some on the plant for future growth. Eat silverbeet leaves as soon as possible after harvesting. Store leaves short term in a perforated plastic bag in the fridge. For long term storage silverbeet can be blanched then frozen.
